KUALA LUMPUR, June 16 — Pakatan Rakyat (PR)-run Selangor today announced the state’s first female council president — appointing Noraini Roslan to head Kuala Selangor District Council.The 46-year-old Noraini was previously planning director at Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ).
Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim in his statement said his administration does not practice gender discrimination.
“Noraini’s appointment was based on her capability and her experience as a planning officer in the Klang Municipal Council (MPK) and MBPJ for over 21 years.
“A good council president needs to know the inner-workings of town planning and we believe she will be able to exercise her responsibilities well,” said Khalid.
Khalid (picture) added that the state also believes that women should be given equal opportunities with men to hold positions of power.
“It should be based on their qualifications and ability for the job,” he said.
Khalid also said the state welcomed the presence of professionals in the administrative system to help improve government policies and carry out the “Merakyatkan Ekonomi Selangor” initiative.
Noraini is a graduate in the field of planning from the University of North Carolina. She worked as a planner in Bernas before moving on to MPK as a planning director and to MBPJ last year.
