Plywood factory closure leaves 120 in the lurch

Monday July 5, 2010

THE closure of a plywood factory in Cheras had left its 120 workers, including 20 locals, in the lurch, reported Tamil Nesan.
They were shocked when the management told them on Thursday morning that it had stopped production due to losses.
The local workers had brought up the case in the Industrial Court, demanding that the management pay them compensation of up to RM245,000.
N. Letchumi, 53, who had been working at the factory for 22 years, alleged that their employer had not paid their overtime claims since August 2005.
Bandar Baru Bangi Labour Department deputy director Omar Jayakumar said the department would ask the management to settle outstanding dues.
