Construction tragedy in Terengganu kills foreign worker

KUALA TERENGGANU, March 29 — The third floor of a building currently undergoing construction work in Universiti Malaysia Terengganu in Gong Badak collapsed today killing a Bangladeshi worker, and caused serious injury to two others.

The incident which took place at 5.30 pm today also caused light injuries on two other workers, while three others escaped unscathed.

The purpose of the construction is to accommodate the Institute of Oceanography.

UMT deputy vice-chancellor of student affairs, Prof Dr Yahaya Ibrahim said that the tragedy occurred due to weak scaffolding, and dismissed suggestions that it was caused by the building’s weak structure.

Prof Dr Yahaya added that a post-mortem will be conducted, and all construction will be halted until further notice.

The Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin expressed regret over the tragedy and called for a thorough investigation to be conducted by the Public Works Department, who is in charge of the project.

Meanwhile, Terengganu Menteri Besar, Datuk Ahmad Said made a visit to the site to inspect the damages caused, and later proceeded to visit the victims in the hospital.
